Notes for Micajah Parke:

Micajah Parke, son of Joseph and Sarah Parke, was born about 1760in Sussex Co., New Jersey in the Village of Asbury, which was built on the banks of the Musconectcong River.

Micajah no doubt was more of a farmer than his father, Joseph, who had the Parks Tavern on the Great Road, as well as a blacksmith's shop. The Park's Tavern was included on a survey ordered by George Washington during his trek through New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. This was the same George Washington who had surveyed property for Joh Park, son of Roger Parke I,  in Virginia in 1750. This same George Washington later became the first President of the United States.

After Micajah's mother died, leaving several young children, Joseph Parke remarried to a widow by the name of Mercy Beemer. Mercy Beemer evidently had two or three children, one being Mary Beemer. Recorded in Zion Lutheran Church, Oldwick, NJ.

Prior to Joseph selling out all of his land, Micajah and his family first moved to Washington Co., Pa. where he remained until 1811. At this time, he decided to move into Ohio and Indiana. In 1811, Micajah took up land in what became Dearborn Co., Indiana and remained there until about 1839, when he moved into Fountain County, Indiana. It is evident that all of his children and their families left New Jersey at the same time and settled with him in Indiana. Copies of his first deed records, receipts, etc. are available.

We do not have any record of Mary Beemer's death, but believe she died in Dearborne Co., Indiana prior to 1820 as she is not found on that census.

There has also been some speculation that Micajah might have remarried in 1839 as a marriage record has been found for a Micajah Parke in Fountain Co., Indiana. No other records are available, but we do believe that Micajah died after 1844, and was buried in the Silver Island Cemetery, Fountain County, Indiana, where several of his family are also buried.

Notes for Micajah II Parke:

"This Micajah was first believed to be Micajah born in 1760 but after

checking tombstone inscriptions, and date of marriage, etc., Will, it was

determined that he could not have been born in 1760, but in 1807.

Micajah made Phillip Lunger his executor of his estate.  His two young

daughters were placed under the guardianship of Phillip, rather than

their mother, Mary Carmen Parke. When the two girls were older, one of

them married and took her mother to Court to claim her rightful

inheritance.  Copies of court records are available from Montgomery Cty.,

Indiana."

      413.  Sarah85, died 177785.

Notes for II Joseph Parke:

Joseph Parke II, settled in the Village of Asbury, having moved into the area from Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, when his father Joseph Parke died in Sussex County in 1754. Joseph Parke I wrote his Will in 1752, which was witnessed by his brother, Jonah Parke and two of his best friends who had previously lived in the Hopewell, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Joseph II inherited land from his father and it is shown in deeds in Sussex, later Warren County, as land partly in Morris and Sussex County.  After his second wife, Mercey Beemer Parke died in 1811 , Joseph began to sell off his property and divide the assets among his children, who had all left the area to go into Ohio, Indiana,  Pennsylvania and Virginia.

We do not know his first wife's name, other than Sarah. She died prior to 1777, as Joseph married Mercy Beemer, Widow of Phillip Beemer, recorded in the Zion Lutheran Church at Oldwick, NJ .

Joseph Parke died in 1815, in Harrison Co., Virginia at the home of his daughter, Theodosia, who had married Archeleus Dunham. A Will was probated for Joseph, which named his living children. The nameof Elijah was found in the Will. We had not been sure of this Elijah until the Will was found. Elijah was probably the son of Joseph and his second wife, Mercy Beemer.

Joseph held several parcels of property in the Village of Asbury...a tavern, hotel, blacksmith shop and some small farms. Deeds for one parcel describes his land as being partly in Greenwich, Morris Co., and Greenwich, Mansfield-Sussex Co., NJ and that he had inherited the property . We know that in Joseph Parke's Will of 1752, he gives land and blacksmith tools to his son , Joseph Parke.

Joseph Parke's tavern was surveyed for George Washington during the Revolutionary War and is noted on a map... known as Park's Tavern. This same George Washington, at an early age of 18, surveyed land in Frederick Co., Virginia for none other than John Parke, in 1750.  John was a son of Roger Parke Sr., while Joseph Parke was of Roger Parke Jr.'s line of descent.

Child of Joseph Parke and Sarah is:

206             i.    Micajah Parke, born 1760 in Sussex Co., New Jersey; died 1844 in Fountain Co., In; married Mercy Beemer 12 Nov 1789 in Hunterdon Co. New Jersey.

      825.  Margaret85.

Notes for Joseph Parke:

Only two children, David and Joseph Parke have actually been confirmed...having been named i n the Will of Joseph Parke, 1752 (Morris Co., NJProbated 1754, Sussex Co., NJ. However, othe r names such as Jacob,William, Abner and Timothy have appeared in records pertaining tothe ab ove and are considered to be sons of Joseph Parke and wife,Margaret. Margaret's maiden name i s not known. Joseph also had fourdaughers, names not mentioned in his will.

Joseph had lived in the Amwell, Hunterdon County area until he purchasedland in Greenwich Tow nship, Morries County, NJ, some time after 1739.This area became a part of Mansfield Woodhous e Township, Sussex Countyin 1735 and later became Warren County... so while Joseph might have owned land in Morris County, his property actually was located intwo counties... Morris and S ussex. The land was divided up betweenhis two sonds as they were the oldest. However, since J onah Parke,a brother to Joseph, was named as the executor of his estate, Jonahmost likely kep t control of the property until the other childrenwere of age.

Joseph Parke had a son, William born about 1750 who served in theRevolutionary War. William m arried Mary Bowlby and they had severalchildren... one being John B Parke, who was murdered i n 1834 knownas the "Changewater Murders". This has been written up by Sharon Meekerof Hunterd on County, NJ and has been very well researched.

Joseph evidently left 30 acres of land, a house, to his son JosephJr. Joseph Jr., then aquire d other acreage, eventurally owning severalparcels of land, including land with a large hous e which became atavern with eating and sleeping accommodations.

Child of Joseph Parke and Margaret is:

Notes for Roger Parke:

christened June 25, 1648, Cartmel Parish.

For many years ROGER'S descendants were not aware of their immigrantancestor. They believed him to be a "John Parke of Virginia". There they naturally found several Johns! ROGER was born in Cumberland Coabout 1648 and that the family were Quakers. ROGER married Anne Patison10 April 1676 as recorded at the Holmes Monthly Meeting in Taylorburne,Allendaile.,- Northumberland near Hexham. Whether this was his first marriage is not known. The next confirmation was his "letter of removal" to the Chesterfield Meeting near Burlington NJ in June 1682. This corresponded with the date of ROGER'S- first deed, "late of Hexham,Northumber- land" with the purchase of 200 acres of land in May from Edward Bylinge, clearly identifying the immigrant' ROGER . In 1702 we find that there bad been a break with the Quakers as ROGER. a neighbor Andrew Smith, and several others joined the Church of England in Burlington. This May have been the result of the arrival of the Rev George Keith, sent over by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Through him grew what became known as the Keithian Movement in New Jersey. It should be noted that in New England there were Puritans and Separatists(from the Church of England) and Quakers in Philadelphia and west Jersey. While to the south, the Church of,England was TH E church. Keith's break with the Quakers During the time he was settled in West Jersey, 'ROGER had close contact with the local Indians. He showed great interest in their study of herbs as a source of healing. Much of this he learned from the Indians and practiced the use of herbs among his neighbors. He soon became known as Dr Parke and was highly revered by many who came for his cure.
